Meta has launched a native, in-app bill payment experience on WhatsApp in India, moving beyond isolated business chatbots into a unified payments directory. Powered by the Bharat Connect (formerly Bharat Bill Payment System / BBPS) network operated by NPCI Bharat BillPay, the upgrade allows users across the country to discover, track, and pay household utilities, credit card statements, and loan dues directly within WhatsApp.
Accessible directly via the dedicated ₹ (Rupee) icon at the top of the chat home screen, the update connects users to more than 22,722 live billers spread across 30 consumer categories.
30-Second TL;DR
- Core News: WhatsApp has introduced a native in-app Bill Payments hub across India, powered by the Bharat Connect network.
- Biller Breadth: Supports 22,722+ billers across 30 categories, including electricity, water, piped gas, FASTag recharges, broadband, insurance premiums, credit card bills, and loan repayments.
- Auto-Fetch & Multi-Account: Automatically fetches live outstanding balances and allows users to manage multiple account IDs under a single provider.
- Payment Flexibility: Accepts payments via UPI, debit cards, and credit cards.
- Rollout Status: Deploying in phases across India for both Android and iOS devices.
Bharat Connect Integration and Native Bill Discovery
Prior to this rollout, users paid bills on WhatsApp primarily by interacting with custom, automated business chatbots operated by individual state electricity boards or municipal utilities.
The new native framework replaces fragmented chat threads with an integrated marketplace:
- One-Tap Access: Tapping the ₹ icon launches a central “Payments Home” dashboard displaying frequently used biller categories alongside a “See All” catalog.
- Automated Bill Fetching: Once a consumer ID or account number is entered, WhatsApp links with the central Bharat Connect registry to automatically fetch live due amounts, billing cycles, and payment due dates in real time.
- Multi-Property Management: Users can register multiple consumer accounts under the same utility provider-such as separate electricity meters for home, office, and parents’ residences-labeling and managing them from one dashboard.
Chatbot-Based Payments vs. Native Bharat Connect Hub
| Feature / Capability | Previous Chatbot Experience | New Native Bharat Connect Hub |
| Discovery Channel | Initiated by texting individual business accounts | Centralized under WhatsApp’s ₹ Payments icon |
| Biller Catalog | Limited to specific onboarded enterprises | 22,722+ registered billers across 30 categories |
| Upcoming Due Tracking | Manual check-ins or uncoordinated push alerts | Auto-fetched dues listed on Payments Home |
| Account Aggregation | Handled across separate chat threads | Unified multi-account management in one interface |
| Payment Modes | Primarily WhatsApp Pay (UPI) | Unified choice: UPI, Debit Cards, and Credit Cards |
| Settlement Clearing | Dependent on individual vendor bots | Standardized NPCI Bharat Connect clearing cycles |

Broad Category Support and Payment Methods
The directory supports high-frequency recurring expenses:
- Utilities & Municipal: Electricity boards, piped gas (PNG), LPG cylinder bookings, municipal property taxes, housing society maintenance, and water supplies.
- Transit & Travel: FASTag toll recharges, National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC), and traffic e-challans.
- Financial Services: Credit card bill payments, commercial loan EMIs, insurance renewals, and recurring educational fees.
Transactions are settled directly through user-selected payment modes, including WhatsApp’s native UPI stack, linked bank accounts, or saved RuPay/Visa/Mastercard debit and credit cards.
Executive Vision and Progressive Rollout
Highlighting the platform expansion, Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head at Meta India, noted:
“For millions of Indians, WhatsApp is already the simplest way to stay close to family and friends, talk to businesses, and access citizen services. With Bill payments, we’re bringing that same simplicity to one of the most routine tasks in every household. No more juggling apps or tracking multiple due dates. We want to make paying a bill on WhatsApp as effortless as sending a message.”
The native bill payments service has entered a phased rollout across India, with universal availability rolling out across stable Android and iOS app releases over the coming weeks.
