Huawei has officially launched its next-generation flagship smartphone lineup in China: the Huawei Mate90 series. Spanning five distinct models-from the standard Mate90 to the luxury Mate90 RS Ultimate Design-the new generation showcases China’s expanding domestic supply chain, arriving with new self-developed τ (Tau) processors, 12,000-nit tandem OLED screens, and an optional detachable XMAGE camera module.

The launch marks a significant milestone for Huawei’s domestic software and hardware independence amid ongoing trade sanctions. With HarmonyOS now operating on over 90 million active devices, all five models went on sale immediately following the keynote broadcast.

Kirin 9050 Pro Silicon & 3D LogicFolding Architecture

At the heart of the Mate90 series is Huawei’s new generation of custom τ (Tau) silicon, led by the Kirin 9050 Pro:

  • LogicFolding 3D Packaging: The platform utilizes domestic 3D chip-stacking technology dubbed LogicFolding, which stacks logic and cache dies vertically to boost compute density and bypass foreign lithography bottlenecks.
  • Domestic CPU & Maleoon GPU: The architecture delivers sustained multi-threaded computing gains and improved energy efficiency, backed by Huawei’s updated Maleoon graphics architecture and a high-throughput DaVinci NPU.
  • Full-Stack Domestic Sourcing: From memory controllers to RF front-end transceivers and satellite communication chips, the Mate90 relies entirely on domestic Chinese component suppliers.

Detachable XMAGE Ruiying Z10 Camera Module

The marquee hardware innovation is the XMAGE Ruiying Z10, an optional detachable camera accessory engineered for professional photography:

  • 1-Inch 50MP Primary Sensor: The modular unit attaches magnetically to the phone’s backplate via high-speed physical contact pins, housing a dedicated 50MP 1-inch sensor.
  • Variable Mechanical Aperture: It features physical step aperture control and custom optical glass elements, transforming the smartphone into a dedicated pocket mirrorless camera.
  • Standalone Utility: When detached, the module can operate independently via low-latency wireless pairing, functioning as a remote wireless camera lens for versatile shooting angles.

12,000-Nit Tandem Displays and 6,000mAh+ Silicon Batteries

The upper-tier variants receive substantial display and battery upgrades:

  • 12,000-Nit Peak Luminance: The Mate90 Pro+ and RS Ultimate Design feature tandem two-stack OLED panels capable of reaching 12,000 nits local peak HDR brightness, ensuring complete legibility under intense outdoor sunlight.
  • High-Density Silicon-Carbon Cells: Equipped with batteries ranging up to 6,200mAh, supported by 100W wired SuperCharge and 80W wireless fast charging.
  • Kunlun Glass 3 Durability: The outer panels are shielded by third-generation Kunlun Glass paired with IP68/IP69 environmental sealing.

Pricing, HarmonyOS Milestones, and Market Reception

Retail pricing for the series starts at ¥5,999 (~$855) for the base 256GB Mate90, while the ultra-luxury Mate90 RS Ultimate Design tops ¥18,999 (~$2,700).

While community reactions have celebrated Huawei’s engineering breakthroughs and the expansion of HarmonyOS past 90 million users, the steep pricing for higher tiers has drawn debate-with critics noting that the top configurations cost as much as a dedicated professional full-frame mirrorless camera setup.

All five models are now available across Huawei experience stores and authorized Chinese retail platforms.
