Social media platform 𝕏 has officially introduced X Numbers, an optional, private contact code designed to let users communicate directly in X Chat without needing to follow each other or accept pending message requests. Announced via the official @chat handle, the feature provides a selective, revokable gateway into a user’s primary inbox, eliminating the need to give out real phone numbers or leave accounts permanently open to unsolicited spam.

The release marks a significant architectural step in Elon Musk’s broader vision of transforming 𝕏 into an “everything app” with standalone communication capabilities. By introducing temporary or semi-permanent access codes, 𝕏 allows creators, event attendees, and businesses to grant immediate messaging and calling access to specific individuals while keeping their general direct messaging (DM) inboxes locked.

What Is an X Number?

Despite its name, an X Number is not an actual telecom phone number, nor is it linked to a user’s cellular SIM card. It is also distinct from the cryptographic safety numbers used to verify end-to-end encrypted chats:

Granular Controls: Refreshing and Hiding Your Code

To prevent contact codes from leaking and becoming permanent conduits for spam, 𝕏 has built several privacy safeguards directly into the X Chat settings:

• Instant Refresh: Users can generate a new X Number at any time with a single tap. Once refreshed, the previous code is permanently invalidated, cutting off access for anyone holding the old number who has not already established an ongoing chat thread.
• Disable at Will: The feature is entirely optional and can be toggled off instantly, closing the gateway without affecting existing conversations.
• Hide from Existing Contacts: By default, people you have already exchanged direct messages with may view your X Number. A dedicated toggle labeled “Hide from others” prevents past contacts from seeing or passing along your active code.
• Origin Indicators: Whenever a new conversation is initiated via an access code, X Chat explicitly tags the thread as having started through your X Number, making it easy to identify how the contact found you.

Practical Everyday Use Cases

The introduction of disposable communication codes addresses common friction points across social networking:

• Conferences and Networking: Attendees can exchange an X Number at industry meetups instead of handing out personal cell numbers, refreshing the code once the event concludes.

Availability and Rollout

X Numbers is integrated into the core architecture of X Chat and is currently rolling out across the main 𝕏 app on iOS and Android, 𝕏 on the web, and the standalone XChat mobile app.

Unlike financial features like X Money, 𝕏 has not gated X Numbers behind an 𝕏 Premium or Premium+ subscription tier.
