Xbox Unveils Pocket-Sized ‘Nano Controller’ for $49.99: 3.5-Ounce Form Factor, All 18 Inputs, Rechargeable Battery, and Cloud Gaming Focus

As Microsoft accelerates its “Xbox Everywhere” cloud ecosystem across mobile screens, handhelds, and living-room displays, the company has officially introduced the Xbox Nano Controller-the smallest first-party gamepad ever engineered for the Xbox platform.

Priced at an accessible $49.99 (undercutting standard $64.99–$69.99 Xbox Wireless Controllers), the Nano Controller is designed to lower the barrier of entry for mobile cloud gaming, younger players, and travelers. Despite measuring just over 5 inches long and weighing a featherweight 3.5 ounces (approximately 99 grams), the gamepad makes zero input compromises: it retains all 18 standard Xbox gameplay controls, integrates an internal rechargeable battery, and introduces a customizable programmable Action Button.

Pre-orders are live today through Xbox.com and the Microsoft Store, with retail shipments beginning November 4, 2026 across 36 launch territories, supported by holiday retail bundles alongside Samsung Smart TVs and Meta Quest headsets.

Pocket-Sized Ergonomics: 3.5 Ounces with Full 18-Input Parity

Miniature third-party mobile gamepads often sacrifice vital controls-cutting thumbstick click buttons (L3/R3), omitting secondary shoulder bumpers, or cramping D-pads into uncomfortable membranes. Microsoft’s accessories division engineered the Nano Controller to maintain parity with full-size hardware:

• Complete 18-Input Array: Features dual asymmetrical analog thumbsticks with full depress clicks, an ergonomic directional pad, four tactile face buttons (A, B, X, Y), dual analog triggers (LT/RT), dual shoulder bumpers (LB/RB), the central Xbox Nexus guide button, View, Menu, Share, and an auxiliary Action Button.
• Compact 5-Inch Dimensions: Measuring approximately 13 centimeters (5.1 inches) in width and weighing just 99 grams (3.5 ounces), the controller is roughly half the mass of a standard Xbox Wireless Controller (~275g with batteries), sliding into jacket pockets or everyday commuter bags.
• Ergonomics for Smaller Hands & Portability: While designed to provide a comfortable travel companion for adults on flights or commutes, the sculpted grip geometry is suited for younger gamers and players with smaller hands who find full-sized console controllers cumbersome.

Rechargeable USB-C Power & Programmable Action Button

Moving away from the traditional AA battery bay of full-sized Xbox controllers, the Nano Controller adopts a built-in power system:

• Internal Rechargeable Battery: Houses an internal lithium-ion cell rechargeable via a standard USB Type-C port located along the top edge, eliminating the need to pack extra disposable batteries while traveling.
• Programmable Action Button: Positioned on the front panel, the dedicated Action Button can be mapped via the Xbox Accessories app across Windows 10/11 and Xbox consoles. Users can program the toggle for instant game-recording clips, screenshot captures, mic mute toggles, or secondary macros.
• Xbox Accessories App Integration: Players can remap every button on the controller, invert thumbstick axes, and adjust trigger response curves directly through system settings.

Universal Connectivity: Consoles, PCs, Mobile, and Smart TVs

The Xbox Nano Controller is built to serve as a universal input device across local hardware and cloud endpoints:

• Dual Wireless Protocols: Houses both proprietary Xbox Wireless technology (for low-latency native pairing with Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox One consoles) and low-energy Bluetooth for cross-platform pairing.
• Cloud Gaming Native: Connects wirelessly with Windows 10/11 PCs, iOS (iPhone and iPad), macOS, Android smartphones and tablets, and Fire TV sticks.
• Smart TV Living-Room Integration: Seamlessly pairs with the Xbox App on supported Samsung Smart TVs and LG WebOS TVs, allowing households to play titles like Forza Horizon 6 or Minecraft Dungeons II via Xbox Cloud Gaming without owning a physical console.

Holiday 2026 Hardware Bundles: Samsung & Meta Quest

To anchor its holiday retail campaign, Microsoft is pairing the Nano Controller with major hardware partners:

• Samsung Smart TV Bundle: Over the 2026 holiday shopping season, select Samsung Smart TVs will bundle an Xbox Nano Controller alongside two free months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for new subscribers, promoting immediate cloud gaming out of the box.
• Meta Quest VR Cloud Bundle: In the United States, Microsoft is collaborating with Meta to include an Xbox Nano Controller and a two-month Game Pass Ultimate membership with purchases of new Meta Quest headsets, allowing users to stream flat-screen Xbox games onto massive virtual theater displays.

Market Positioning and Verdict

At $49.99, the Xbox Nano Controller occupies a unique niche in the gaming peripheral landscape:

1. Undercutting Mobile Retainers: Dedicated mobile clamp controllers (such as the Backbone One or Razer Kishi) typically retail between $99 and $119 and lock users into specific device form factors. The Nano Controller offers universal wireless compatibility across phones, tablets, PCs, and consoles for half the cost.
2. Official First-Party Support: Unlike third-party micro controllers that suffer from inconsistent Bluetooth latency, input mapping issues, or dead-zone drift, the Nano Controller benefits from official Xbox firmware updates and native OS integration.
3. The Accessible Gateway: For families with young children or multi-device households looking for a cost-effective secondary controller for local multiplayer titles, the Nano delivers full-fledged gaming ergonomics in a pocketable build.

Pre-orders for the Xbox Nano Controller are open now through Xbox.com and the Microsoft Store in 36 countries-including the US, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia, and Japan-with open retail availability and bundle shipments commencing November 4, 2026.
