Software update season has arrived across Xiaomi’s ecosystem. Following several months of internal testing and public Mi Pilot beta evaluation, Xiaomi has officially commenced the stable global rollout of HyperOS 4.

Unlike prior transitions where version upgrades occasionally recycled older Android bases for value-tier hardware, every build in the HyperOS 4 lineup is built natively on Android 17.

The opening wave of over-the-air (OTA) updates kicked off on November 3, 2026, highlighted by a hefty 8.4 GB installation package arriving on handsets such as the POCO F8 Pro (firmware version OS4.0.2.0.XPKMIXM).

The update introduces an interface overhaul dubbed Soft Light Glass (also referenced as Liquid Glass), which brings refined lighting physics, translucent frosted-glass styling, expanded lock-screen typography, and deeper multitasking capabilities.

With Xiaomi projecting that approximately 80 smartphones and tablets will run stable HyperOS 4 by the close of 2026, the rollout is organized into three distinct release waves running from early November through December.

Visual Overhaul: Soft Light Glass & UI Personalization

HyperOS 4 redesigns how the display renders depth, transparency, and background layers:

Advertisements
  • Soft Light Glass Design Language: The user interface replaces flat opaque cards with multi-layered, translucent frosted-glass textures that dynamically adapt their soft lighting effects based on background colors and active wallpapers.
  • Deep Lock-Screen Customization: Introduces expanded clock typography, scale adjustments, depth-effect subject isolation behind clock layers, and modular lock-screen widget grids.
  • Fluid Floating Window Physics: Multitasking windows now support smoother snap gestures, split-screen transitions, and better handling of floating app orientations when rotating between vertical feeds and horizontal video playback.
  • Dynamic Notification Stacking: Grouped notifications and system status alerts feature clean separation to reduce notification panel clutter during busy workdays.

Performance Under the Hood: 20% Faster App Launches

Beyond visual refinements, HyperOS 4 optimizes low-level resource scheduling:

  • Refined Memory Management: Xiaomi has overhauled its kernel-level thread scheduler, reducing background app terminations and memory fragmentation to keep heavy background tasks suspended efficiently.
  • Up to 20% Faster Cold App Launches: The system prioritizes foreground thread compute, which Xiaomi claims reduces app launch delays by nearly 20% while smoothing out frame pacing across 120Hz, 144Hz, and 185Hz high-refresh displays.
  • Reduced Video Frame Drops: Optimized graphic rendering pipelines minimize frame stutter during 4K video playback and streaming.

On-Device Intelligence & Cross-Border AI Tools

HyperOS 4 integrates multimodal generative intelligence into native system apps:

  • Smart Voice Transcription & Action Items: Built-in voice recorder tools now automatically transcribe multi-speaker audio, generate structured meeting summaries, and convert spoken reminders directly into scheduled calendar tasks.
  • Intelligent Notes Organization: The system categorizes research notes, formats pasted snippets, and extracts key data points using local on-device language models.
  • Global vs. Regional Availability: Xiaomi notes that while core performance optimizations and design updates apply universally, select cloud-dependent generative AI features showcased during Chinese domestic launches remain subject to regional language model rollouts and local compliance.

Checking for the Update & Pre-Installation Checklist

If you own an eligible Wave 1 device such as the POCO F8 Pro or Xiaomi 17:

  1. Open Settings on your device.
  2. Tap About Phone (or About Device).
  3. Select the HyperOS Version banner to trigger a manual server check.
  4. If firmware OS4.0.2.0.XPKMIXM (or your regional equivalent) is available, tap Download and Install.

Installation Guidelines:

  • Storage Space: The initial OTA package is large, clocking in at approximately 8.4 GB. Ensure your device has at least 15 GB to 20 GB of free internal storage to unpack the payload safely.
  • Wi-Fi Connection: Due to package size, download over an unmetered, high-speed Wi-Fi connection to prevent file corruption.
  • Battery Level: Keep battery levels above 60% or connect to a wall charger prior to initiating the installation.
  • Feedback Submission: Xiaomi has formally invited early recipients to log any edge-case interface bugs or battery anomalies directly through the pre-installed Services & Feedback app, helping refine regional patch builds as the software expands toward its 80-device target by late December.
