After years of regulatory hurdles and negotiations, Apple is preparing to roll out its digital wallet service, Apple Pay, in India in October 2026. The phased rollout will kick off in partnership with Axis Bank, the country’s fourth-largest credit card issuer with over 16.2 million active cards.
The launch brings native Apple Wallet integration to eligible iPhone and Apple Watch owners, allowing users to tokenize their credit cards and authenticate contactless tap-and-pay transactions using Face ID or Touch ID at point-of-sale (POS) terminals across the country.
Axis Bank First: How Card Tokenization and Tap-to-Pay Will Work
Under the initial deployment phase, Apple Pay will function as an on-device digital credential manager rather than a separate third-party payment app:
- Tokenized Card Storage: Axis Bank credit cardholders will be able to add their Visa and Mastercard credentials directly into the native Apple Wallet app. The physical card number is never stored on the device or shared with merchants; instead, transactions are processed via a unique Device Account Number stored securely within the iPhone’s Secure Enclave.
- One-Step Biometric Authorization: Rather than waiting for SMS-based one-time passwords (OTPs) or manually entering 4-digit PINs at merchant counters, users double-click the side button, authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID, and hold their device near any standard NFC-enabled card machine.
- Wearable Freedom: Apple Watch users will also be able to authorize purchases independently, eliminating the need to take their phone or wallet out during daily checkouts.
The Regulatory Shift: Why RBI Guidelines Cleared the Path
The primary roadblock delaying Apple Pay in India for nearly a decade was the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) strict two-factor authentication (2FA) and local data-storage mandates.
Recent regulatory updates from the central bank have formally permitted device-native biometric authentication as a valid primary verification factor for card transactions, removing the mandatory requirement for an SMS OTP on every domestic payment. This policy shift created the compliance foundation necessary for Apple’s closed, hardware-level security architecture to operate legally within India’s financial framework.

Navigating a UPI-Dominant Market
Apple Pay enters an Indian digital payments landscape where the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) accounts for roughly 84% of all digital transaction volumes.
While Android users have long had access to third-party NFC tap-to-pay services via Google Pay and Paytm, iPhone users have historically been restricted to scanning static QR codes. Apple’s initial rollout deliberately targets high-spending urban consumers:
- Targeting Premium Spenders: Although iOS commands around 8% to 9% of India’s overall smartphone base, iPhone owners make up a disproportionate percentage of high-limit credit card users.
- Deferred UPI Support: Native UPI rail integration has been postponed to a secondary phase while technical and data-handling negotiations between Apple and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) continue.
Expansion Pipeline: HDFC and ICICI in the Horizon
Axis Bank serves as the anchor partner, but Apple is in active discussions with HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank to expand coverage. Together, these three private lenders control more than 50% of the active credit card market in India.
While discussions regarding interchange fees and commercial margins are still being finalized with other institutions, the October debut with Axis Bank represents a major step forward in establishing Apple’s services ecosystem in India.
